Having looked back on my previous posts I have noticed that they have been on an unregular basis. As a result of this I need to make more of an effort to at least put a comment on my blog every other day, if not everyday until the hand in date of my dissertation.

I will have more to write about now, as I am beginning to flesh out my dissertation. I also have found some more journal articles and usefull websites to write posts about.

Having consulted my research adviser I have realised that the question I was wanting to answer was too vague, also I had fallen short in realising the complexities involved when researching issues of violence imitation from computer games. It was suggested to me that perhaps it would be better to look at gaming from the angle of moral philosophy. From this it was decided that I should get to grips with the basics of ethics. I found a very useful website http://caae.phil.cmu.edu/Cavalier/80130/ which features an on-line guide to Ethics and Moral Philosophy.

Within the subject there are three predominant areas: Metaethics, Normative Ethics and Applied Ethics. The first is concerned with the nature of ethics and discussing different ways of approaching it. It aims to show the limitations of moral philosophy and ethical thinking. The discipline of Normative Ethics is predominantly interested in determining what should be contained and what should feature in the moral behaviour of humankind. The third and final paradigm deals with moral issues that may occur within a specific situation/realm. It aims to apply ethical thinking to a specific situation where issues may need to be discussed. This area will be the predominant focus of my research as I aim to apply moral philosophy onto the structure of video games. Having glanced through a number of journal databases, there seems quite a rich source of information dealing with the issue of ethics in gaming.

Have tracked some books down on the library catalogue that I feel are relevant reading for my dissertation project. These are based upon virtual reality, which is a new keyword that I have not tried before. These resources are titled Cultures of Internet: virtual spaces, real histories, living bodies. Found it difficult to track down some academic journal articles, might be searching in the wrong places.

I have setup this blog today as a point of call for noting down any thoughts that are deemed to be important for my research project, as part of my third year studies on the Communcation programme at Manchester Metropolitan University. My research will be predominantly based around ‘Friendly Fire’ within online first person shooter games, such as Counterstrike and Quake 3 Tournament.

Earlier today I opened up Internet Explorer, too discover a link on my homepage http://www.msn.co.uk. This link took me to an article on the msn gadgets and technology site. The article was dicussing how the massive increase in online gaming, in particular on consoles such as the Ninetendo Wii and Microsofts Xbox 360. I found it interesting that in the 6 months since the release of the Ninetendo Wii there are now 3.5million users currently subscribed the their wireless online gaming network. Also it was noted that Microsoft in releasing its online gaming service ‘Live!’ on PC. This platform was specifically constructed for gaming on the Xbox, however it has been so popular that it has been anounced that it will be rolling out onto PC. As a result it will enable gamers on consoles to play gamers on PC for the first time ever!
